‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ seems to be the front-runner thanks to its stunning CG and motion-captured primates.

Were this a sane world where Oscar voters paid the smallest shred of attention to populist popcorn flicks that happen to be — in addition to mega-bucks-grossing juggernauts — freaking great movies, then the Best Picture nominees might look a little more like the Best Visual Effects ones (and less like this year’s top-prize picks currently going unwatched in theaters across the country).

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ isn’t just the biggest movie of 2011 ($1.3 billion in box-office receipts) but the finest installment of that venerable franchise. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is, in a word, so totally amazingly oh-my-lord awesome. Is that more than one word? Too bad, because “Apes” looked great, spun a heartbreaking character tale in the middle of a sci-fi thriller, and gave Andy Serkis, as the motion-captured central simian, the opportunity for one of the most affecting performances of the year. “Hugo” was pretty great too — and at least Martin Scorsese’s film, alone among the Visual Effects nominees, also nabbed a Best Picture nod. And while we won’t go so far as to say “Real Steel” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” are excellent films, they’re both certainly fun (something we can’t say about Best Picture honoree “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”).

The Visual Effects category, then, represents a sort of guide to some of the year’s great geeky movies. Here are our predictions for this category in 2012:

Who Will Win: “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and the visual-effects whizzes at Weta Digital (the folks behind “Avatar”) have this category wrapped up. Their motion-captured apes were not only leaps and bounds more compelling than the mask-wearing creatures in past “Ape” films, but they were the year’s most stunning CG creations. Weta was so successful at grafting an ape’s body and facial features onto Serkis’ figure that you simply forgot you were watching a human actor. In any other year, “Hugo” would be well positioned to take this category. And the hour-long battle sequence at the end of Michael Bay’s “Transformers” was a staggering achievement. But this is no ordinary year. “Apes” for the win.

Who Should Win: Yeah, “Apes” for the win. It’s all too seldom the case that the most deserving nominee actually wins a category. Not so at this year’s ceremony. Our only beef is that in addition to topping this category, Serkis didn’t get any love in the best supporting actor category. There remains a reluctance on the part of awards-season insiders to honor an actor if his performance comes wrapped in pixels. One day, no doubt, that will change. And when that happens, perhaps we’ll all look back at Serkis’ turn as rebel leader Caesar and agree it was one of the best of 2011.

Mixtape: Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa

Real Spit: Kirko Bangz has been progressing quite nicely. Even before his breakout single “Drank in My Cup” began charting on the Billboard Hot 100, the Houston upstart was laying groundwork in H-Town’s mixtape scene. In 2009, he dropped the aptly titled Progression, and now, three years later, he has followed up with its sequel Progression 2: A Young Texas Playa on mixtape site Datpiff.

In this new digital era, where most rap artists occupy the same space on the Internet, it seems that where a rapper hails from has become less important. Still, Bangz clearly is looking to put on for his city.

“People were like, ‘Where you from?’ They thought I was from Cali, Atlanta, stuff like that. So really, with the mixtape and my last single ‘Drank in My Cup,’ I wanted people to know I was from H-Town,” Kirko told Mixtape Daily. “It’s real H-Town: We have stuff for the girls, of course, we got hip-hop stuff, we got storytelling stuff.”

Progression 2 starts off with “Say Hello,” an introductory freestyle over DJ Khaled and Drake’s “I’m On One.” It’s not surprising that Kirko would jump on a track Drizzy has made famous, considering he has drawn more than a few comparisons to the Toronto rapper, thanks to his penchant for both rapping and singing. While Drake is openly inspired by Houston’s screw culture, Kirko truly embodies his city’s sonic characteristics on “Drank in My Cup.” The slow-rolling, lean-inspired cut repurposes Houston’s signature underground sound for radio; it debuted at #96 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week.

“A lot of people kinda taking our swag too. I just wanted to bring that back and take that back from them,” Bangz said, never naming who the swagger jackers actually are.

On “Play Me,” KB takes on Drake’s “Trust Issues” and furthers the comparisons. Paul Wall reps for H-Town and shows up on “Knowmtalmbout,” and on “Trill Young N—a,” Kirk stakes his claim in the streets of his hometown.

For the most part Progression 2 keeps a consistent vibe with a number of soul-dripped, screw-inspired anthems. He does switch things up however, particularly on towards the end on the hilarious story-telling joint “Ugly Bitches” where he recalls all of his less than glamorous sexual conquests.

It’s not flawless, but over the course of 13 tracks, Kirko Bangz shows a pretty solid progression.

» “Touch the Sky.” “It was really brought to me, like, it was already on a plate; I just had to put the food on the plate. I wanted a real hip-hop type beat. A lot of people don’t know that I actually can spit a little bit, so I wanted to spit and touch on a lot of things that I thought about. Like a lot of people say a lot of stuff about me, so I touched on those things on that song and kept it real hip-hop.

» “Play Me.” “I feel like a lot of people and girls be trying to play me. I’mma playa, so I had to address that situation, like, ‘Don’t try and play me.’ ”

It’s been just two months since Katy Perry and Russell Brand split, but rumor has it he’s moved on already – with 25-year-old model and artist Oriela Medellin Amieiro.

“It was about 9:30 in the morning, and I saw them getting into a Range Rover,” a witness dished to Life & Style, which made Katy’s heartbreak its new cover story.

“She had obviously stayed over at his house because she was in evening clothes and high heels. She threw her head back and laughed – she was having a good time.”

Katy Perry now wonders, according to a “lifelong pal,” whether Russell really was the “changed man” he claimed to be when they married in October 2010.

“I’m such a fool,” Katy recently confessed, allegedly. “I believed in him.”

Sources say that Russell Brand has been “on a tear” recently, partying, clubbing, coming on to women all over LA, a harem of babes that apparently includes, but is not limited to, the Mexican-born Oriela Medellin Amieiro.

“Russell is very flirty with the ladies,” a source says. “He gets a lot of phone numbers … all the women just hand over their numbers and he takes them.”

On February 20, Russell was surrounded by groups of women during his stand-up show at Largo in LA. “There were girls everywhere,” an eyewitness says.

“It’s very disturbing to Katy that he’s moved on so quickly,” the friend says. “She was just shocked to hear he was out partying again and trying to pick up girls.”

“It sickens her … she feels humiliated and burned.”

Mmm hmm. We have no doubt she’s still reeling from her divorce, like any girl would be, but she’s made it clear no “close sources” speak for her.

Arriving at LAX Airport in style, actress Kate Bosworth and her boyfriend, director Michael Polish, returned to the east coast today (February 21) after a trip to London.

Rainn Wilson took to Twitter to apologize after an admittedly “poorly conceived” joke about getting date raped to Led Zeppelin yielded some online criticism.

The man behind so many great Office quotes, whose Twitter is usually a must-read, wasted no time in realizing the error of his tweet-first, think-later ways.

“Apparently my poorly conceived date-rape tweet upset a lot of folks,” he wrote this morning. “Not a good topic to joke about. Sorry & won’t do that again.”

Starting late Monday, and leaking into the early hours of today, a minor uproar mounted against the comedic actor’s seemingly out of character comment.

What was the offending Tweet-missive? “If I were ever date raped I would want it to be to ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zeppelin,” the 46-year-old wrote.

Not hard to see how that didn’t go over well. However, Rainn has since deleted the Tweet, replacing it with his apology, so … lesson learned, we’re guessing.

On Tuesday (February 21), some of the biggest names in the music business headed to London’s O2 Arena for the 2012 Brit Awards, where Adele, Rihanna and Bruno Mars were among the stars who took home prizes.

Grammy winner Adele added to her award collection by nabbing two Brits, including British Female Solo Artist and the night’s big prize, Mastercard British Album of the Year, for 21. And on Wednesday, the U.K. singer will celebrate the one-year anniversary of her chart-topping 21.

“It’s been an amazing year,” she told the room as she accepted the Female Solo Artist prize. She then joked to presenter Kylie Minogue, “I feel like a drag queen next to you,” before thanking her record label for “for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be.”

There were also live performances from Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and, of course, Adele, who sang “Rolling in the Deep” just a little over a week since her Grammy performance.

Meanwhile, just as One Direction seems poised for a U.S. takeover the U.K. boy band nabbed a British Single award for their track “What Makes You Beautiful,” which was released in the States last week.

Rihanna and Bruno Mars won International Female Solo Artist and International Male Solo Artist, respectively. “[Thanks to] all my fans who continue to support me no matter what,” said Rihanna, who made headlines on Tuesday (February 21) by adding Chris Brown to her “Birthday Cake” remix.

Coldplay took home the British Group prize for the third time. On the other end of the spectrum, Grammy winners the Foo Fighters beat out folks like Jay-Z and Kanye West (a.k.a. the Throne), Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5 to win International Group. Lana Del Rey won the International Breakthrough Act award, just weeks after she dropped her debut, Born to Die.

Other awards included Outstanding Contribution Award for Blur, a Critics Choice Award for Emeli Sande and British Male Solo Artist for singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, who also took British Breakthrough Act.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 DVD is, unsurprisingly, flying off the shelves. After the film was released to disc at midnight Saturday morning, it reportedly sold 3.2 million discs over the course of two days.

But, that’s not all: The flick also snagged 50,000 downloads and 80,000 video-on-demand transactions during the two-day period when the sales were tracked, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The numbers make “Breaking Dawn” the top-selling release so far this year. It bows at #1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall disc sales chart, followed by “Lady and the Tramp” and “A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas.”

Now that it can be played on repeat, Twihards are certain to be memorizing every sweet and saucy moment of “Part 1″ before the final installment hits theaters this November. A scene from the Bill Condon-directed “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” played at a special Target in-store event just before “Part 1″ dropped.

Fans were treated to five minutes of footage, including behind-the-scenes shots of “Twilight” hunks Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner preparing for battle in the woods. The exclusive scene followed Bella as she finds a note in a book with instructions from Alice, explaining what to do to get new passports.

The clip then cut to an emotional conversation between Edward and Bella, who share a juicy kiss. But, perhaps the scene fans most wanted to sink their teeth into was the first shot of vampire Bella, which included those famous red eyes and special-effects-aided speed.

The Throne will kick off a 12-show European tour beginning May 20 in London.

Jay-Z and Kanye West are about to get the people going again — this time overseas.

International Hov and Martin Louis the King Jr. are taking their fan-favorite and critically acclaimed tour to Europe, where they recorded significant portions of their groundbreaking Watch the Throne LP.

The 12-show run kicks off May 20 at the O2 Arena in London and runs through Switzerland, Norway, Germany and Belgium, ending on June 13. As far as when Jay and ‘Ye will be bringing their ubiquitous hit “N—as in Paris” to its point of inspiration, the duo will be holding down two shows on June 1 and June 2 at Paris Bercy.

Jay and Kanye kicked off their WTT tour in October in Atlanta at the Phillips Arena. NEWARK, New Jersey — It was a day of both sadness and celebration as Whitney Houston‘s fans gathered in her birthplace to mourn the death of the fallen pop diva on Saturday (February 18).

Police set up blockades on the streets surrounding New Hope Baptist Church, keeping the public several blocks away from the private funeral in every direction. On the corner of Orange and Nesbitt streets, a group of fans gathered to sing some of Houston’s biggest hits like “The Greatest Love of All” and “I Will Always Love You”.

On Sussex Avenue, about four blocks from the church, another group of fans gathered. A Philadelphia artist who goes by the name Mark G. drew a portrait of Houston, which he had fans sign. By the time MTV News interviewed him he had gathered hundreds of loving notes and signatures, and the artist said he plans to give the portrait to Whitney’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, as a present through a connection he said he has with the family.

“Whitney was connected to the fans, and when she left, she shined her light and this is something creatively that I did that connects the people to Whitney,” Mark G. explained of the artwork he created in ballpoint pen.

“My heart goes out to the Whitney Houston family,” Miami native Karin Collins said. “I feel so bad, I was crying all last night. I’m blasting her music in my car everyday and I just feel so bad and my heart goes out to Bobbi Kristina as well as her grandmother [Cissy Houston].”

While fans were mostly upbeat and positive, some Newark residents were upset by the decision to keep the service private without holding a bigger public send-off at the much larger Prudential Center, as was first rumored.

“It was sad that they didn’t have it in the Prudential Center, I don’t know why they didn’t do that,” Brian Collins said. “All the fans in Newark could’ve came out and just gave their all in all out to her, pay tribute to Whitney Houston. She meant a lot to us, she never forgot where she came from and I love you Whitney.”

With things as they were logistically, fans might have been more comfortable watching the invite-only funeral from home anyway. But the crowds that assembled at each police check-point wanted to feel closer to the ceremony. On Norfolk Street off Central Avenue, about 75 people surrounded a CNN transmission truck and watched as R. Kelly sang a spirited rendition of “I Look to You,” a song that he penned for Houston in 2009.

After the funeral an excited group waited on Central Avenue hoping to see some of the ceremony’s high-profile guests as they filed out. There were no sightings of Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Kevin Costner or any other celebrity from the fans’ vantage point, but when Whitney Houston’s golden hearse turned onto Central, fans gave the musical icon one last cheer.

Nicolas Cage‘s Ghost Rider has received a makeover from “Crank” directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, but that’s not enough to keep the critics happy. Most have panned “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” citing mediocrity as its biggest crime.

We’ve rounded up a sample of the reviews of the film, so you can decide whether you’ll be making the trip to hell this weekend.

The Story
“It’s been five years since stunt rider Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) signed on the bloody line and became Beelzebub’s flaming-biker bounty hunter. Sniffing out evil and sucking the souls out of bad guys whenever his head catches on fire, Blaze finally wants rid of his cursed vigilante alter ego.” — Paul Bradshaw, TotalFilm.com

The Lead
“Returning as the eponymous not-quite-hero, Nicolas Cage spends stretches of the film on autopilot while waiting for scenes he deems worthy of his particular brand of crazy. They’re not frequent enough to please the Cage aficionado, but sequences in which the twitchy, inappropriately giddy actor tries to choke back transformations into a bloodthirsty skeleton-on-fire are welcome in a film where often-charismatic costars Ciarán Hinds and Idris Elba are singing off-key.” — John Defore, The Hollywood Reporter

The Directors
“Of course, the 3-D is only of any use whenever the camera stays still, but as with the previous helming efforts of Neveldine/Taylor (the more proudly provocative ‘Crank’ 1 & 2 and ‘Gamer’), the action is often either jittery or roving, shot from behind with the swerving rhythm that comes from one filming on rollerblades, thus doing the format few favors. Their glib touches litter the screenplay, from quips about YouTube and the odd moment approximating a video game glitch to the aforementioned throwaway shot of Ghost Rider taking a flaming leak and nodding to the camera amid the unlikely inferno.” — William Goss, Film.com

The Supporting Cast
“It’s even hard to fully enjoy the mostly-great Ciarán Hinds as the Devil, a role he should be perfectly suited for. Unlike everyone else, he’s obviously trying to hold back and not look ridiculous, but that’s also tough considering how poorly his dialogue is written.

Similarly, young Fergus Riordan may not be quite as annoying as Thomas Horn, but he introduces the same issues any kid character does when brought into a movie geared towards adults. Violante Placido does a perfectly fine job looking fine, making it plainly obvious that she’s basically another poorly-developed female character thrown into a male-driven action movie with very little actual purpose.” — Edward Douglas, ComingSoon.net

The Final Word

Critics aren’t buying into the love triangle between Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy.

“This Means War” has all the makings of a perfect romantic comedy/ action flick, including the very attractive and high-caliber stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, the capable direction of McG, comic relief from Chelsea Handler and a script from the guys whose combined talents have brought us “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Role Models” and “Just Go With It.”

The story revolves around two best friends and highly skilled CIA agents who fall in love with the same woman and go to war with each other in an effort to win her heart. We imagine the filmmakers set out to make a fun, if only slightly farfetched, popcorn flick, but the critical masses couldn’t seem to suspend their disbelief. The film has a 30 percent Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Story
“Having great-looking stars who have the added bonus of actually being able to act makes the noisy romp ‘This Means War’ more tolerable that it ought to be. It’s essentially a love-triangle version of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” rendered even more bombastic in the hands of “Charlie’s Angels” director McG. (Simon Kinberg, who wrote the 2005 film that spawned Brangelina, shares script credit here with Timothy Dowling.) So you’ve got your sport utility vehicles tumbling in slow motion, your gravity-defying shootouts and your obligatory explosions galore. Naturally, the premise is the most high-concept, contrived confection: Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), who has no idea these guys know each other. They promise their shared pursuit won’t ruin their friendship, but good luck with all that.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

The Bromance Factor
“The relationship that truly sizzles — from the sentiment to the satire — is the one between FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), with Pine and Hardy pulling off one of the better bromances in recent memory. … Hardy (‘Inception’) and Pine (‘Star Trek’) are the heart of the film — proving to be excellent opposing sides of the same coin. Both balance their characters’ cynicism with a certain sweetness, their chemistry fairly crackling, electrifying the screen almost any time they’re sharing it, whether taking down a bad guy or squabbling about who is more lovable (it’s a tossup). With Lauren, on the other hand, they are basically gentlemen, so not electrifying.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

The Suspension of Disbelief Factor, or Lack Therof
“And in the film’s opening minutes, it feels as if that might be the desired effect: It’s loaded with overblown action chestnuts like from-the-hip gunplay, people dangling from the sides of skyscrapers and a gruff commanding officer. (That would be Angela Bassett, who shows up periodically to growl at her charges in a role that might have been hilarious had anyone thought to write anything legitimately funny for her.) But a good parody takes a finesse that isn’t in the vocabulary of McG, a bargain-basement Michael Bay more concerned with cool than coherence. Instead we get utter nonsense like a video store with a database that conveniently includes customer photos for the CIA to tap into. (Related: These characters are, in 2012, going to a video store?) In another scene, FDR wrestles on the floor with a small dog that has just attacked him, as Lauren stands 5 feet away, oblivious. The Farrelly brothers should sue the producers not for stealing the scene outright from ‘There’s Something About Mary,’ but for imitating it so badly.” — Ian Buckwalter, NPR

The Final Word
“Part spy caper, part buddy picture, part romantic comedy, part raunchy-girl-talk sex farce, This Means War has been assembled with all the haphazardness of an amateur science experiment. The project was directed by the amped-up industry go-getter McG (Charlie’s Angels), and it’s had a long trial-and-error history. The initial script dates back a century — or at least about a decade — and the string of famous guys who didn’t take the dual lead male roles reportedly includes Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Sam Worthington, and, stretching even further back, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. All this fiddling and fumbling shows on the screen. And yet, and yet … I confess I enjoyed everything that’s all over the place about the finished product. ‘This Means War’ may have been hammered together by brute Hollywood force, but there’s this going for it: It’s game to throw in anything that’ll keep the motor running.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Katy Perry may be deep in shooting the video for her latest single, “Part of Me.” The singer was spotted wearing a military uniform on the set of something this week.

In several photos that made their way online, Perry dons a cropped black wig and fatigues. One shot is of her standing next to male soldiers. Another features her standing in a store. The last photo is of her in a pool with a soldier (still wearing the Army garb). According to Perez Hilton, she is shooting the military-themed video at Marine Corps base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California.

A rep for the base could not confirm reports that she is shooting there when contacted by MTV News. Meanwhile, her rep had not responded to our request for comment by press time.

Earlier this week, Perry teased that she was looking forward to hitting the set for the “Part of Me” video. “Holy power of the Grammy’s, Part Of Me is already top 10 on itunes! U guys are killing it! NICE! Can’t wait to shoot this video!” she tweeted on Monday, one day after she debuted the song at the Grammys.

The Teenage Dream: Complete Confection song is a bit darker than most Perry fans might be used to. The song is about the dissolution of a relationship, during which Perry sings scathing lines like “Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now.”

And in what has been taken as a jab at her former hubby, Russell Brand, she adds, “You can keep the diamond ring/ It don’t mean nothing anyway.”

‘Now it’s officially time to move forward,’ Baltimore MC tells MTV News of getting to work with Bad Boy Records.

Los had no idea that Diddy would be announcing his signing to Bad Boy with MTV News at the top of the month, but now that the cat is out of the bag, the Baltimore, Maryland, rap standout is excited to get to work.

“He didn’t tell me that he was gonna say it. I think that he was just in the moment and he was just goin’ and it just kinda came out,” Los told MTV News on Tuesday. “I got the news at the same time other people got the news.”

The The Crown Ain’t Safe MC officially signed his deal with Diddy’s storied label at the end of last year, but they had decided to save the announcement. The news broke a little earlier than Los expected, but he is hyped up nonetheless. “I was just excited about it. I was like, ‘Now it’s officially time to move forward, let’s get everything goin’,’ because we had been keeping it low for a minute,” he said.

This isn’t Los’ first go-round with Bad Boy, however. He auditioned for Puff’s “Making the Band 2″ in 2002 and made it to the end of the competition, but wasn’t a part of the manufactured Da Band because he wouldn’t sign the necessary waivers. The truth is, Los wasn’t interested in being a part of a group, but he would go on to sign a solo deal with Diddy around 2005. The original Bad Boy deal went through a local independent label that Los was signed to, but after the owners of the label went through some legal trouble, Los was released from Bad Boy in 2008. Still, he and Combs maintained a connection.

“He called me every day, every night; he called me,” Los said. “Man this guy don’t sleep; he would call me 2 in the morning, then text me 3 in the morning, text me 4, 5. I’m like, ‘Yo when is he getting rest?’ ”

Diddy’s texts would pretty much mirror the motivational tweets he’s known to send. In the middle of the night, Los we get random messages like “Let’s make history” and “Let’s go!” It was that type of energy that the young MC craved. Eventually he decided that he would once again sign with Bad Boy.

“It just reminded me of his brand and what it represents: no sleep, hard work, history, success,” Los said of the work ethic that has become synonymous with all things Diddy. “I decided to bring it back to Puff, and I felt like no one could amplify my situation as much as he could anyway.”

Talking about what drew her away from her musical efforts and to the film project, Miss Swift recently told press, ?Dr Seuss books were a huge huge part of my childhood and it really made me fall in love with the way you can make words bounce off a page if you get them in the right syncopation,? while adding that she was ?inspired by what Dr Seuss was able to do with words.?

Chris Brown turns up the music to a big 11 in his video for his song “Turn Up the Music.” The video, released on Friday (February 17), follows a well-dressed Brown while he enjoys a dance-filled night on the town.

The video tracks Brown from drinking in the street, to hailing a futuristic hover-cab filled with masked creatures, to hitting a warehouse rave filled with even more masked people, all watched over by some woman who appears to be the queen of the party, gazing at everyone from her own perch. From there, the clip is an eye-catching spectacle of various dance routines with Brown displaying his signature smooth moves.

During the video, the singer dons several outfits and looks that appear to pay homage to his own hero, Michael Jackson. Rocking well-tailored suits that are accessorized with fedoras and suspenders, Brown performs dancefloor acrobatics as lights and lasers dance around him. Brown’s dance moves are aggressive and in your face, but he is still light on his feet.

At one point in the high-energy clip, the footage is slowed down as Brown does a flip. In another memorable scene, Brown dances alone in a rain-filled room, wearing white dress pants, a black tank and a fedora. As the song wraps up, he splits into three people, comes back together, takes off his shirt and throws it at the camera — and breaks the lens doing it.

The eye-popping video was co-directed with Godfrey Tabarez and shot in Los Angeles earlier this month. Produced by the Underdogs and Fuego, it’s the lead single off Fortune, out March 16. He performed the song last Sunday at the Grammy Awards.

Having flown back to her homeland this past week with her family, Nicole Kidman stepped out for an appearance at the Tropfest 2012 short film festival in Sydney, Australia on Sunday (February 19).

The 45-year-old actress was all smiles as she passed through the arrivals area at The Royal Botanic Gardens before joining in on the iconic cultural event.

Recognized as the largest short film festival in the world, Tropfest is also lauded for “its enormous contribution to the development of the Australian film industry by providing unique platforms for emerging filmmakers through its events and initiatives, and new and expanded audiences for their work.”

Miss Kidman’s visit to the Tropfest festivities comes as she’s spending time in the Land Down Under while her country rocker hubby Keith Urban is tending to his coaching duties on the upcoming Aussie version of “The Voice”.

‘What my heart feels cannot be expressed in words,’ singer says in a statement issued to MTV News.

The sudden death of Whitney Houston has left her family, friends and fans broken-hearted. And on Friday (February 17), her close friend Ray J finally ended his silence, releasing this statement to MTV News:

“Over the past few days I’ve tried to process the emptiness that I am experiencing. What my heart feels cannot be expressed in words. The world lost an icon but I lost my close friend. Nippy I miss you so much! You were so happy and full of love. Your smile will live in my heart forever.”

The “One Wish” singer was no doubt close to Houston, and while neither ever confirmed a romance, it was widely speculated that he and Houston were an item.

Soon after Houston was found dead in her L.A. hotel room on February 11, reports began to surface that it was Ray J who found her body in a bath tub at the Beverly Hilton. Those reports were quickly refuted by Ray J’s representative.

The statement comes just a day before Houston is to be laid to rest following her funeral at Newark, New Jersey’s New Hope Baptist Church Saturday at noon.

The funeral is invite-only, but fans will be able to watch an online live stream. New Hope Pastor Joe A. Carter will preside over the ceremony, and gospel singer Marvin Winans will give the eulogy.

People magazine reported on Thursday that Kevin Costner, who co-starred with Houston in the 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” will also speak at the funeral.

Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston are going to leave it all behind for “Wanderlust,” but before they do, they’re answering your questions.

On Wednesday, February 22, Rudd and Aniston will sit down with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz to present a clip from their brand-new movie “Wanderlust” during “MTV First.” At 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV, the two will introduce the clip. Immediately afterward, the interview will continue for 30 minutes on MTV.com, where Rudd and Aniston will answer more of your questions.

To get your question answered, all you have to do is send it via Twitter, using @MTVNews and the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskWanderlust.

“MTV First” will give you a chance to see a never-before-seen clip from “Wanderlust,” two days before it hits theaters February 24.

In “Wanderlust,” Rudd and Aniston play two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers who look for a new way of life. After first seeking refuge with relatives, the couple stumble across Elysium, a commune of free-spirit people who welcome them with open arms — a little too open.

“Wanderlust” comes from director David Wain and co-writer Ken Marino, two of the guys behind the cult classic “Wet, Hot American Summer,” and comedy super-producer Judd Apatow. Justin Theroux and Malin Akerman co-star.
